leading questions...

Our expressed goal at this stage is to explore how photographers deal with issues of self and society; and discover how artists and journalists alike begin to develop thematic works.

in partnership with cathy panebianco, we will try several approaches to picture making and story telling, and look for areas wher the two seems to find a natural affinity.

during this unit cathy will play a central role in guiding us through a selection of artists, styles, techniques, and approaches. since her visits to the school are limited to once a week, we will make copious use of the vanguard blog and email to collaborate with her.
--- --- --- --- ---
your first assignment is to view all four of the series outlined to the left. choose the one you feel has the most to say to you and answer the following questions on your blog:

1] what is the series about?
2] how did it come about?
3] is it journalistic or artistic?
4] does any part of the series make you feel 'uncomfortable'?
5] how might you improve the series?
6] can you compare this event/story to any similar event in your own life?

due date: tuesday february 27 (eoc)

thoughts while waiting for the pizza...

first of all, thanks to cathy panebianco for agreeing to be our artistic advisor for this year's project. your willingness to give yourself over as advisor for the next four months means a lot to us.

we are currently in the discovery phase of the project. at present we are looking at contemporary documentaries and fine art projects, and developing rudimentary project goals.

the first step is for everyone to post a preliminary project proposal on their blog. if you do not yet have a blog set up please do so today! use the web address vanguardphoto(lastname) as your blog address (don't use the parentheses) for example my blog address would be vanguardphotokirsch. title the blog as you wish... once you're set up and ready to go post a proposal asap- you can change it later... use the following format:

1] what you plan to do
2] why you want to try this
3] how you will accomplish this
4] what assistance you will need [technical, spiritual, etc]
5] look for an image that might be somehow related visually or thematically to your idea
